Tree care and
forest health goes beyond the trimming and removal of brush and trees . The purpose of
the department’s update is to share with you the day-to-day tasks along with the
significant accomplishments of program.

Below are some highlights of the Forestry program in 2017.

Tree City USA
The City of New Brighton is a Tree City USA for the 35th time in 2017. There are a
number of requirements the City must meet to maintain this status. These include
having a formal board or department that is responsible for the care of all trees on City-
owned property, an ordinance that forms the foundation of the City’s tree care program,
program with an annual budget of at least $2 per capita and an annual Arbor Day
celebration and proclamation.

Arbor Day
The 2017 Arbor Day Celebration was held at Hansen Park. The fourth grade class from
Bel Air assisted in planting trees throughout the park. The 2018 celebration is April 27 at
New Brighton Lions Park.

Tree Sale
The Parks and Recreation Department partners with the Friends of the Parks and Trails
of St. Paul and Ramsey County for an annual tree sale. Residents of New Brighton
donated $352 to plant in the City parks in 2017. The 2018 Tree Sale deadline is April 20,
with the pick-up being May 5.

Emerald Ash Borer (EAB)
Ash trees are treated in New Brighton to keep them healthy. The treatments began in
2010 and will continue in 2018.
