I:\Commissions - NEW FOLDER\PREC (Parks Recreation and Environmental Commission)\2018\Working Documents\03.07.18\V_A1 Forestry Update.docx

Diseased Tree Survey
Staff are looking for three main diseases. These include EAB as mentioned above, but
also Oak Wilt and Dutch Elm disease.

Missouri Gravel Bed & Tree Planting
The Parks and Recreation Department operates a Missouri Gravel Bed to provide young
trees for planting throughout the year within New Brighton. In 2017, there were 115
trees tended to in the gravel bed.

Buckthorn
Buckthorn is an invasive species and difficult plant to eradicate. The City and its
residents have invested a lot of time and energy into buckthorn removal. A Boy Scout
project removed two truckloads of buckthorn and other wood debris from Driftwood
Park. The positive effects of these efforts can be seen at Hansen Park. Buckthorn still
persists throughout the City and requires constant and consistent effort to manage.

Tr ee Trimming
City staff clear alleyways, sidewalks, streets, rights of ways and signs, enhancing site lines
and safety.

Other Projects
Staff have had the opportunity to perform some out of the ordinary projects in 2017 as
well. One fun project included teaming with Department of Community Assets and
Development to remove a fallen willow tree from Rice Creek.
