NEW BRIGHTON
DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC
SAFETY
Interoffice Memorandum
To: Janice Gundlach, Assistant Director of DCAD
From: Trevor Hamdorf-Deputy Director
Subject: Highview Comments
Date: 05/09/18

Based upon the most recent information made available by the school district for the proposed
upcoming Highview Middle School project, the Public Safety Department offers the following
comments/suggestions;

Public Safety Commission identified areas from Director Paetznick;
- Are the entrances wide enough to accommodate the lanes of vehicles and specifically, is there
enough space for a bus to exit onto 7th Street NW with a right-hand turn without needing to
enter into the eastbound traffic lane?
- There was mixed reaction about additional traffic control measures (i.e., stop signs) and also
general disbelief that staff/parents would enforce moving fully through the drop-off/pick-up
queue so as to maximize the loop.
- Perhaps the best idea was to limit on-street parking at certain hours so as to discourage parents
from doing their own drop-off/pick-ups in the existing marked shoulders adjacent to the parking
lot entrances.

Additional staff identified area;
-Ensure that all drive aisles maintain a sufficient width to allow at minimum a single lane
of traffic to pass through
