He indicated there was often a disconnect between the role of a <br />ijcommission member. He understood commissioners had an advisory role. He explained he would be happy to <br />listen and respectfully have a conversation about the difficult topic. He believed appointed and elected <br />officials had a duty to listen and be part of the core solution, not the problem. <br />Councilmember Allen asked if these actions would change if it was a lifelong friend. <br />Mr. Johnson stated he wanted to believe he would react in the same manner. <br />Mayor Johnson reported each commission is tasked with making recommendations to the City Council. She <br />asked how Mr. Johnson would respond if he disagreed with a policy or Ordinance already in place. <br />Mr. Johnson stated he would want to follow the prescribed procedure in a thoughtful way. He indicated he <br />could bring his concerns to the Commission in a respectful manner to see if the policy should remain or make a <br />recommendation to the City Council. He believed it was healthy to have conversations about policies, so long <br />as that was done in a respectful manner. <br />Councilmember Burg asked what the City's biggest challenges were. <br />Mr. Johnson stated the City had some challenges that were universal such as social equity. He believed the <br />City had to ensure it was representing all people, through its offered services, that all people have a voice in <br />government. He indicated this was a big issue and could not be solved overnight. He explained that in <br />Roseville, he served on the GARE Taskforce where social equity was addressed. He commented it was also <br />important for the City to provide parks that were attractive that made people want to move into the community. <br />He believed aesthetics were important to bring the community to where it wants to be. <br />Councilmember Jacobsen asked if he was interested in land uses and variances; diversity and accessibility; <br />economic programs, retention and development; the impact of recreation on the community; or the impacts of <br />public safety. <br />Mr. Johnson stated he was most interested in parks but noted economic programs and redevelopment was also <br />interesting to him. <br />Councilmember Jacobsen questioned if Mr. Johnson was available in the evening for meetings. <br />Mr. Johnson commented he was available on Wednesday nights for a monthly meeting but noted emergencies <br />do arise from his work on occasion. He stated he would make these meetings a priority. <br />Mayor Johnson discussed the process the Council would be following for the committee member <br />appointments. She asked if Mr. Johnson had any questions. <br />Mr. Johnson asked how much advisement the Council would like from its commission members. <br />Mayor Johnson stated she believed items could be discussed from the Council on down or at the Commission <br />level and be brought up to the Council. She anticipated PREC had more opportunity to bring items forward in <br />order to enhance and update the City's parks. <br />Councilmember Jacobsen agreed that PREC had the most opportunity to bubble items up to the Council. <br />
