VI. Business Items
(1) WSB Presentation on Comprehensive Parks Plan
Schlichting stated Parks and Recreation Director Jennifer Fink and representatives from WSB
were in attendance to provide the Commission with a presentation on the Comprehensive
Parks Plan. He commented on the neighborhood meetings that were planned to assist with
gathering information from the public for the Comprehensive Parks Plan.
Fink discussed the purpose of a Parks System Master Plan and the benefits it would have on the
City. She reported the 2040 Comprehensive Plan called for a Par ks System Master Plan. It was
noted the study would consider the City’s evolving diverse demographics, would strengthen the
City’s sense of place and would celebrate community pride. The engagement and planning
process for the study was discussed, along with the potential Master Plan outcomes. Further
discussion ensued regarding the City’s local and regional parks. Lastly, she commented on the
public engagement opportunities that were being pursued by the City and reviewed the
members of the community service on the Comprehensive Parks Planning Committee.
Discussion included:
The EDA encouraged staff to seek new ways to reach out to younger families and young
professionals in the community.
The EDA provided staff with feedback on their favorite park re lated amenities and activities
in the City of New Brighton, along with concerns or threats in the community.
The EDA then brainstormed ideas and opportunities for New Brighton, noting trail
connections in the community were important, along with redevelopment of the south Old
Highway 8 corridor.
The potential of a municipal fieldhouse was discussed.
The EDA marked a map of the City pin pointing the points of interests, areas of concern and
commenting on areas in need of growth.
A discussion was held regarding dog parks and the amount of land that was needed to
provide the community with a proper sized dog park.
Staff encouraged the EDA to visit the social pinpoint on the City’s website to provide staff
with further feedback for the Parks System Master Plan.
(2) New Brighton Exchange Hotel Update
Schlichting reported staff recently participated in a conference call with representatives from
Colliers, Ryan Company, and TGC Development regarding interest in one (and possibly two)
hotel sites on Block B within the New Brighton Exchange. TGC builds facilities for many of the
major “flags,” and they believe this would be an ideal site for an Extended Stay America (ESA)
and possibly a complementary facility to be determined. Information on the standard ESA
facility was reviewed, as was a mock-up of where one or two buildings would potentially be
located.
