.

.

.

Agenda Section: _

'i. 2

- --- - --

CXt70 ley

CITY OF NEW BRIGHTON

Report Number: _

-------------

REQUEST FOR COUNCIL CONSIDERATION

Report Date: 24 January, 2006

MANAGER'S REVIEW/RECOMMEN~
No comments to supplement this report .

ITEM DESCRIPTION: Acee tance of Heart Safe Communities Award
DEPT. HEAD'S APPROVAL: Robert J. Jacobson, Director of Public Safety.

Comments attached

Explanation:

The City of New Brighton and Allina Medical have been long standing partners in the "Heart Safe
Communities" initiative. This relationship began in 2001 with the community based donation of more than
$20,000 for the purchase of automatic external defibrillators (AED) for New Brighton. That initiative
resulted in the purchase of nine defibrillators for use in emergency vehicles and city facilities. This initiative
was successful to the efforts of this grassroots effort including the Public Safety Commission and Council,
and was also supported by a $10,000 grant from Medtronics for community CPR/AED training. And, the
donation efforts were further energized by the AED save of resident Mr. Gene Johnson. Today, the City of
New Brighton has 23 AED's available at various locations to include many churches, schools, and businesses.
Mr. Johnson has gone on to become a member and leader of the Midwest Sudden Cardiac Arrest Survivor
Network, and has been a visible and vocal tribute the success of AED's. In recognition of these efforts,
AIUna Medical presented the Heart Safe Communities Award to Mr. Gene Johnson and Ms. Jo Tollefson at a
recent award banquet. Dr. Charlie Lick of AlIina Medical will be present with a short video and presentation
on the status of Heart Safe Communities and the importance of AED's in communities. Mr. Johnson and Ms.
Tollefson would like to address the council on the success in New Brighton of AED's and Heart Safe
Communities to include the need to keep up the momentum and success, and they will also present the Heart
Safe Communities Award to Council. Ms. Joan Mellor will also be present and request that she be
recognized for past efforts of Medtronics in helping to fund training of citizens in New Brighton. And, Mr.
Jim Reynolds, another SCA survivor from New Brighton, will be present as another living example of the
success and importance of AEDs in our Community.

Recommendation:

ouncil allow 10 minute presentation/update on Heart Safe Communities and Accept Heart Safe
ward.

1: \COUN elL \REPOR TS\2006\Public Safety\HeartSafeA ward.doc
