February 26, 2019 Page 3 of 6 the Council with background information on her organization noting Rise began in 1971 and has 26 locations in the metro area. She reported Rise was working to be a part of the community and not separate from the community. She stated she appreciated the recreational and social opportunities that were available for the individuals that attended the Rise Adult Day program at the New Brighton Community Center. She provided further comment on the musical and art therapy attendees receive from Rise. She explained the Rise program at the New Brighton Community Center was so successful Rise was requesting to expand their space. Mayor Johnson stated she recently visited with the adults attending the Rise program and explained this was an incredibly enthusiastic bunch. She indicated she was pleased the City had space for Rise within the Community Center. Councilmember Jacobsen commented he fully supported the expansion of Rise at the Community Center and stated he appreciated how this program was building community in New Brighton. Councilmember Allen explained he was so proud of the progress that has made to provide these individuals with a day program in the community. He thanked Rise for treating these individuals like people. Parks and Recreation Director Fink reported the staff within the Community Center was lucky to have these individuals onsite daily. 4. Proclamation for the Tibetan Community Motion by Councilmember Allen, seconded by Councilmember Jacobsen to approve a Proclamation Honoring the Tibetan Community in the City of New Brighton. 3 Ayes, 0 Nays - Motion Carried Councilmember Allen read a proclamation in full for the record honoring the Tibetan community in the City of New Brighton and declaring March 10, 2019 to be Tibet Day. Tenzen Metock, resident of New Brighton, stated on behalf of the Tibetan Foundation of Minnesota she wanted to thank the Council and Mayor for passing a proclamation recognizing the Tibetan residents in the City of New Brighton. Carden presented the Council with a gift of thanks and for declaring March 10th to be Tibet Day. Consent Agenda 1.
