REQUEST FOR COMMISISON CONSIDERATION

ITEM DESCRIPTION: New Brighton’s Future in Economic Development
DEPARTMENT HEAD’S APPROVAL:
CITY MANAGER’S APPROVAL:
No comments to supplement this report ___ Comments attached ___

Recommendations: Review the provided information, listen to the staff presentation, and begin
a discussion on areas EDC members would like to focus on in the coming
years.
Current efforts to continue & build upon?
New strategies or issues to pursue?
Specific projects to consider?

Feedback received at this meeting will help us to prepare for a future joint
meeting with the City Council (date TBD).

Current Focal
Points Since 2015:
1. Business Retention & Expansion (primarily the use and promotion of
Open to Business)
2. Housing Programs
3. Place Making Initiatives (establishing a sense of place in the community)
4. Physical Redevelopment Opportunities (New Brighton Exchange,
Midtown Village, etc)

Overview:

Periodically it is important for the City to take a step back from current
activities and reassess whether it is on the correct path to achieve its goals
and objectives. With completion of the 2040 Comprehensive Plan, this is
an ideal time to revisit the Economic Development Commission’s goals and
objectives as outlined in code, within the new comp plan, and as identified
with the City Council in 2015. Staff will review all three areas of guidance
with the commission on August 7th, and will lead a discussion on where
individual commissioners would like to go moving forward.
Agenda Section: VI
Item: 4
Report Date: 08/01/19
Commission Meeting Date: 08/07/19
