NEW
BRIGHTON
building tomorrow today
Council Worksession
January 12, 2021
5:00 pm
Present: Mayor Kari Niedfeldt-Thomas
Councilmember Abdullahi Abdulle
Councilmember Graeme Allen
Councilmember Pam Axberg
Councilmember Emily Dunsworth
Absent:
Staff in Attendance: Devin Massopust
Guests in Attendance:
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic this meeting was held both virtually and in-person.
Discussion regarding Council Liaison Appointments to City Commissions and various Public Agencies
Massopust requested the Council discuss liaison appointments to City Commissions and various public
agencies for 2021. He reported along with the current appointments, the previous Council supported the City
creating an Inclusive Community Commission that would address needs and issues in the community related to
inclusivity. He suggested the Council consider who would be interested in serving with this group as well.
Mayor Niedfeldt-Thomas requested Councilmember Dunsworth and Councilmember Allen speak first.
Councilmember Dunsworth reported she would be happy to serve as the PREC liaison. She explained she
would prefer to not serve on the EDC.
Councilmember Allen indicated he currently serves on the Public Safety Commission and previously served on
the EDC. He commented he did not have a strong preference as to where he served in the coming year, but
asked that he not be appointed to the Planning Commission, because his wife serves with this group. He
reviewed the other organizations that he has served with which included CPY and the Ramsey County League
of Local Government.
Councilmember Dunsworth reported she also serves on the Cable Commission and has served with this
organization since she joined the City Council.
Mayor Niedfeldt-Thomas asked if the Councilmembers typically served each Commission for one year and
then rotated. Massopust stated the length of term should be at least two years for liaisons.
The Mayor and Council supported Councilmember Dunsworth serving as the liaison to PREC and
Councilmember Allen serving as the liaison to the Public Safety Commission.
Councilmember Axberg state she would prefer to be appointed to the Planning Commission because it would
be tough for her to attend a Wednesday morning meeting.
