January 12, 2021 Page 1 of 7 <br />NEW <br />BRIGHTON COUNCIL PROCEEDINGS <br />building tomorrow today THE CITY OF NEW BRIGHTON <br />Pursuant to notice thereof, a regular meeting of the New Brighton City Council was held Tuesday, <br />January 12, 2021 at 6:30 pm in the New Brighton Council Chambers. Due to the COVID-19 <br />pandemic this hybrid meeting was held both virtually and in person. <br />Present: Mayor Niedfeldt-Thomas, Councilmembers Abdulle, Allen, Axberg, and Dunsworth <br />Absent: <br />Also Present: Devin Massopust-City Manager, Sarah Sonsalla-City Attorney, Gina Smith -Interim <br />Finance Director, Jennifer Fink -Parks and Recreation Director, Tony Paetznick- <br />Public Safety Director, Craig Schlichting- Director of Community Assets and <br />Development, Ben Gozola-Assistant Director of Community Assets and Development <br />Call to Order <br />Mayor Niedfeldt-Thomas called the meeting to order at 6:30 pm. <br />Pledge of Allegiance <br />Mayor Niedfeldt-Thomas led the Council in the Pledge of Allegiance. <br />Call to Order <br />Pledge of Allegiance <br />Oaths of Office <br />Oaths of Office <br />City Manager Massopust administered the Oath of Office to Mayor Kari Niedfeldt-Thomas, <br />Councilmember Abdullahi Abdulle and Councilmember Pam Axberg. A round of applause <br />was offered by all in attendance. <br />Public Comment Forum <br />Public Comment <br />Mayor Niedfeldt-Thomas opened the Public Forum for comments from the public. <br />Forum <br />Paul Hart, 346 Cleveland Avenue SW, explained he served on the City Council of New <br />Brighton from January 1976 to December 1977. He congratulated the Councilmembers and <br />Mayor for serving the community. He explained he moved out of the City of New Brighton <br />years ago and has lived all over the metro area. He stated he has now come back to New <br />Brighton. He discussed the members of the Council he served with and how contentious <br />matters could be. He reported he served as a census numerator and election judge in 2020. He <br />explained in the 45 years since he was a member of the Council the demographics of the City <br />have changed tremendously. He encouraged the Council to continue to build on the work that <br />began by the Task Force in 2018 in order to build up a stronger and more welcoming <br />community. He stated he wanted to see New Brighton being a leader in this area.
