January 12, 2021 Page 1 of 7 NEW BRIGHTON COUNCIL PROCEEDINGS building tomorrow today THE CITY OF NEW BRIGHTON Pursuant to notice thereof, a regular meeting of the New Brighton City Council was held Tuesday, January 12, 2021 at 6:30 pm in the New Brighton Council Chambers. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic this hybrid meeting was held both virtually and in person. Present: Mayor Niedfeldt-Thomas, Councilmembers Abdulle, Allen, Axberg, and Dunsworth Absent: Also Present: Devin Massopust-City Manager, Sarah Sonsalla-City Attorney, Gina Smith -Interim Finance Director, Jennifer Fink -Parks and Recreation Director, Tony Paetznick- Public Safety Director, Craig Schlichting- Director of Community Assets and Development, Ben Gozola-Assistant Director of Community Assets and Development Call to Order Mayor Niedfeldt-Thomas called the meeting to order at 6:30 pm. Pledge of Allegiance Mayor Niedfeldt-Thomas led the Council in the Pledge of Allegiance. Call to Order Pledge of Allegiance Oaths of Office Oaths of Office City Manager Massopust administered the Oath of Office to Mayor Kari Niedfeldt-Thomas, Councilmember Abdullahi Abdulle and Councilmember Pam Axberg. A round of applause was offered by all in attendance. Public Comment Forum Public Comment Mayor Niedfeldt-Thomas opened the Public Forum for comments from the public. Forum Paul Hart, 346 Cleveland Avenue SW, explained he served on the City Council of New Brighton from January 1976 to December 1977. He congratulated the Councilmembers and Mayor for serving the community. He explained he moved out of the City of New Brighton years ago and has lived all over the metro area. He stated he has now come back to New Brighton. He discussed the members of the Council he served with and how contentious matters could be. He reported he served as a census numerator and election judge in 2020. He explained in the 45 years since he was a member of the Council the demographics of the City have changed tremendously. He encouraged the Council to continue to build on the work that began by the Task Force in 2018 in order to build up a stronger and more welcoming community. He stated he wanted to see New Brighton being a leader in this area. He indicated he would like to be a part of this process.
