Parks & Recreation Updates will be emailed around the 10th of each month. <br />Parks and Recreation Department Happenings <br />October, 2019 <br /> <br /> IMPROVING HEALTH <br /> Four teams are competing in the women’s volleyball league at Highview on <br />Wednesdays. <br /> The fall adult softball season is came to a close in October. 19 teams completed the <br />regular season and tournament this fall. <br /> The Adaptive Bowling held at the Mermaid Bowling Lanes had 33 teen and adults <br />participating. <br /> Five adults are participating in Beginner Line Dancing. <br /> Twenty-three adults 55+ are attending Exercise Your Calm classes to reduce physical, <br />mental and emotional stress. <br /> Eight adults age 55+ attended Indoor Plant Care offered by the University of Minnesota, <br />Extension Master Gardener Volunteer Program. <br /> Nine Adults age 55+ attended the Club 55 Fall Social to meet new friends, enjoy apple <br />cider, caramel apples and fun games. <br /> Seven adults age 55+ enjoyed a mystery lunch <br /> Seven adults age 55+ attended day trips to the Renaissance Fair and Stillwater. <br /> FOSTERING HEALTHY YOUTH DEVELOPMENT <br /> Over 100 youth ages 3-12 participated in basketball and soccer lessons this fall at the <br />Community Center, Highview Middle School, and Hansen Park. <br /> Over the next two weeks, the first few sessions of fall swimming lessons will finish up <br />with 157 participants in swimming lessons on Thursdays and Saturdays. Two more <br />sessions will start up mid-November and go through December. <br /> Over 225 youth ages 4-13 participated in youth flag football and soccer leagues this fall. <br />We are especially grateful for the help of over 30 volunteer coaches who set aside their <br />time and energy to help the kids develop an early love of playing sports. <br /> The aquatics program welcomed three new volunteer instructor aids (ages 12-14), who <br />are gaining leadership, communication, and decision-making skills while learning to <br />interact with and teach kids how to be safe around the water. <br /> 62 children, ages 3-11, are learning tap, jazz and ballet steps at the NBCC each week. <br /> 63 children, ages 4-14, attended the gymnastics program and learned skills on the <br />beam, bars, vault and mats. <br /> Martial Arts classes were held for 3-6 year olds and 7 year olds-adult. 31 kids, teens and <br />adults learned the fundamentals of kicking, blocking and punching (non-contact). <br /> SUSTAINING FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY <br /> Seven adults 55+ learned the basics of how to prepare a home to sell. The program was <br />offered free of charge.
