Assessment of Need 18CITY OF NEW BRIGHTON PARK AND TRAIL SYSTEM MASTER PLAN - DRAFT
PARK GAP ANALYSIS
One of the goals from the Comprehensive
2040 plan, as well as national park planning
standards, is to ensure that residents are
within a 10 minute walking distance from a
high-quality public park or open space (1/2
mile).
Using ParkServe, an online mapping provided
by the Trust for Public Land, it shows that 91%
of residents within New Brighton are within 10
minute walk of a park. According to Map 2.8,
on the following page, there are a few areas
in the city that have gaps. Neighborhoods
directly to the west of Long Lake is one area
not within a 10 minute walk. To the southeast,
near the industrial portion of New Brighton,
there is also a gap. However, with the future
addition of parkland and amenities around
Jones Lake, this area will be better served.
It is important to note that freeways, roads and
railroad tracks also act as barriers for people
to safely walk or bike to a park. New Brighton
is bisected by 694 centrally, by I-35W on the
east, and criss-crossed by railroad tracks.
The city, in general, has parks scattered
throughout existing neighborhoods. Since New
Brighton is almost completely built out,
there is limited space for new parkland
to be added unless through future
development opportunities.
How we work Blog Media room Magazine Support usHOME OUR WORK #10MinWalk ABOUT
New Brighton, MN
91% of New Brighton residents live
within a 10-minute walk of a park
Everyone deserves a park within a 10-minute
walk of home.
Is New Brighton meeting that goal?
91%of residents live within a
10 minute walk of a park.
National average 54%
DONATE PERCENT OF RESIDENTS WITHIN A10-MINUTE WALK OF A PARK BY AGEChildren (0 - 19)Adults (20 - 64) Seniors (65+)
PERCENT OF RESIDENTS WITHIN A
10-MINUTE WALK OF A PARK BY INCOME
91%91%90%
High Income Middle Income Low Income
0
100
91%90%92%
PERCENT OF RESIDENTS WITHIN A 10-MINUTE WALK OF A PARK BY RACE/ETHNICITY
13%of New Brighton's city
land is used for parks and
recreation.
National median 15%
Where in New Brighton are parks needed
most?
Other
2 or More Races
White
Pacific Islander
Hispanic
Black
Asian
American Indian
0 100
Figure 2.1: Percent of Residents in New
Brighton within a 10-Minute Walk of a Park by
Income.
