Assessment of Need 21CITY OF NEW BRIGHTON PARK AND TRAIL SYSTEM MASTER PLAN - DRAFT
City Comparison
The table below shows a comparison of park amenities to similar and/or adjacent communities
to New Brighton. This data does not take into account regional park and other amenities within a
community, such as school property or private recreation options.
Shoreview generally ranks the highest in terms of acres per 1,000 residents but has a lower
population density and more land area. Given the size and density of New Brighton, it is fairly
comparable to similar communities but does rank lower for the number of acres of park land per
the current population and is still seeing anticipated population growth with limited available land
for recreational expansion. For comparison, Crystal was similar to New Brighton in terms of size
and density but has a higher amount of park land and number of parks per population. Columbia
Heights ranked as the smallest in land area, almost half as much as New Brighton, and has a
similar number of parks as New Brighton but considerably less park land per population. This
analysis should be used in conjunction with comparison to national standards, and athletic
assessments along with results on public input.
Table 2.3: City Comparison of Park Amenities
Comparable City
Name
Square MilesResidents per Square MileNumber of Parks1 Park per How Many ResidentsAcres of Park Land Managed Acres of Park Land Per 1,000 ResidentsMiles of Paved Trails (approx.)BallfieldsMulti-Purpose FieldsColumbia Heights
Pop. 19,496
3.40 5,734 16 1,219 130 6.67 5 12 11
Crystal
Pop. 22,436
5.87 3,822 27 831 263 11.73 6 10 5
Fridley
Pop. 27,500
11 2,500 38 724 316 11.49 15 14+4
Golden Valley
Pop. 20,371
10.54 1,932 30 679 1,035 50.81 50 18+5
Hopkins
Pop. 18,678
4.10 4,555 20 933 231 12.42 4 9 4
Shoreview
Pop. 26,764
12.74 2,103 11 2,436 1,400 53.85 27 incl.
schools
6
New Brighton
Pop. 22,787
7.00 3,255 17 1,340 213.50 9.37 12 8 7
Key
Highest number reported or
calculated
