January 28, 2020 Page 2 of 7 <br />lord of South Minneapolis before he was kicked out. <br />Eric Williams, 2050 14th Street NW in Unit #206, explained he signed his lease in November <br />of 2019 with Cedar Management. He indicated he was a veteran and a single dad. He noted <br />the lease he signed was a six month option. He stated it was unfortunate that his apartment <br />building had sold because he would have to move himself and his son again. He commented <br />he was previously homeless for nine months and he did not have a great credit score. He <br />expressed frustration that the new management was not willing to resign leases or assist with <br />relocation expenses. He reported his lease was supposed to end on May 1st. He stated he had <br />no idea where he would go. He indicated he has lost two vehicles due to unlawful towing that <br />was conducted by QT Properties. He requested the City step in and help with relocating the <br />displaced residents. <br />Calandra Chandler, 1476 20th Avenue NW, stated she received notice on January 1st to vacate <br />her apartment. She commented QT Properties has had no communication with the tenants <br />since that point. She reported the residents of Pike Lake Apartments formed an association to <br />assist with addressing this situation. She stated Mr. Quilling had been invited to sit down with <br />the residents and no word has been received. She requested the Council provide the <br />association with a letter of support. She indicated the residents need more time to relocate. <br />She noted she had two grandkids and it was the middle of winter. She asked the Council to <br />help in any way possible. <br />Noel Pronto, 1476 20th Avenue NW, reported she has lived in her building for the last 13 years. <br />She explained she was looking forward to her building renovated and was quite surprised when <br />she received an eviction notice. She commented it was not her choice to move and there has <br />been no communication with management since January 1st. She stated she used to feel safe <br />living in this apartment and was now struggling with the fact she would have to move in the <br />middle of winter. She stated she was feeling a huge sense of loss. She indicated she no longer <br />wanted to live at this apartment complex given the fact the new company was horrible to its <br />residents. She stated she has found a new apartment and was pleased she could remain in New <br />Brighton. She asked that the City Council request more time from QT Properties for the <br />residents. <br />April Brown stated she and her three daughters love living in New Brighton. She indicated the <br />school district was wonderful. She discussed her situation noting she moved into Pike Lake <br />Apartments last November. She commented on the money she spent to move into the building <br />and described how corrupt the management was. She reported she has been accused of being a <br />squatter and she was now facing a court case. She explained she has always worked to help <br />take care of others and she now needed help with from the City in order to take care of her <br />family. She stated she was really scared about what would happen to her family. <br />Angelica Vega indicated she was from Puerto Rico, along with her husband and children. She <br />noted she has lived in her apartment for several months. She explained her husband and <br />children were sick and have been sick since the carpeting was removed from her building. She <br />has been told she has to find a new place to live. She indicated she wants a better life for her <br />family and has a daughter with special needs. She commented she did not have the money to <br />move nor did she have help from her family. She requested the City step in and help. <br />Mayor Johnson asked if the carpeting had been removed from the units or the hallways. Ms. <br />Vega explained the carpeting had been removed from the hallways. She commented further on <br />the mold that has been located in her apartment unit. <br />Ivory Taylor, 462 9th Avenue NW, explained she was a lead advocate at Home Line. She <br />commented on the calls she has received from tenants at Pike Lake Apartments. She stated for <br />years she has received hotline calls from QT Property tenants. She discussed their practices <br />and noted tenants across the metro area have been pushing back against these practices. She <br />reported QT Properties was well aware of the impact of their actions on community members. <br />She noted QT Properties was not acting in good faith in this community and any upgrades or <br />renovations should benefit the people who live in the building currently.
