January 28, 2020 Page 1 of 7 <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br />Pursuant to notice thereof, a regular meeting of the New Brighton City Council was held Tuesday, <br />January 28, 2020 at 6:30 pm in the New Brighton Council Chambers. <br /> <br />Present: Mayor Johnson, Councilmembers Allen, Burg, Dunsworth, and Jacobsen <br />Absent: <br /> <br />Also Present: Devin Massopust-Acting City Manager, Sarah Sonsalla-City Attorney, Brenda Davitt- <br />Finance Director <br /> <br /> <br />Call to Order <br />Mayor Johnson called the meeting to order at 6:30 pm. <br /> <br />Pledge of Allegiance <br />Mayor Johnson led the Council in the Pledge of Allegiance. <br /> <br />Public Comment Forum <br />Mayor Johnson opened the Public Forum for comments from the public. <br /> <br />Brian Greiger, resident of Pike Lake Apartments, stated he has lived in his apartment for the <br />past 21 years and 9 months. He thanked Councilmember Allen for attending a meeting at his <br />complex last night. He reported Pike Lake Apartments was a very diverse complex and he did <br />not like what was going on. He believed he was being treated badly by QT Properties. He <br />commented on the notices that were being shoved under doors. He discussed the safety <br />concerns he had and noted lights were out in stairwells. <br />Mayor Johnson thanked Mr. Greiger for sharing his concerns regarding QT Properties. <br />Michelle Doran, 1476 20th Avenue NW-Apartment #108, explained the new management <br />company at Pike Lake Apartments took effect December 10th. She indicated welcome bags <br />were handed out to residents and on New Years Day residents received notice to vacate letters. <br />She reported residents are being given 60 days to vacate the building. She expressed concern <br />with the demolition work QT Properties was doing on the building. She questioned how she <br />would come up with the money to move and find a new place to live. She inquired how QT <br />Properties would be able to renovate the buildings when they were full of cockroaches, dust <br />and mold. She stated she has thought about taking her own life because this situation was so <br />impactful. She indicated she would have a very difficult time finding new housing because she <br />lived on a fixed income. She questioned why the apartment units were not being renovated as <br />they were vacated as was described in the welcome letter. <br />James Simon, 1476 20th Avenue NW, stated he was in a different situation as he could afford <br />to pick up and move. However, he wanted to share how bad it was to let QT Properties operate <br />in New Brighton. He encouraged the Council to speak with the other communities they have <br />worked in. It was his understanding QT Properties could no longer do business in South <br />Minneapolis because of how they treated their tenants and the City Council. He explained QT <br />Properties has had building code violations, legal issues, and were sending illegal eviction <br />notices.
