I:\Commissions - NEW FOLDER\PREC (Parks Recreation and Environmental Commission)\2020\Working Documents\10.07.2020\Scholarship Program.docx

Memo

To: City Council
From: Jennifer Fink, Director of Parks and Recreation
Subject: Presentation on current scholarship program and discussion
about offerings from other communities
Date: October 23, 2020

The New Brighton Parks and Recreation Scholarship Program is currently operated in house. The
program offers those New Brighton residents who have a financial hardship, to request a 50%
reduction in fees.

We have included the current policy. This information was presented to the Parks, Recreation
and environmental Commission on Oct 7. The hope is that we can share with the Council some
of the history of the program, as well as information on what other Cities in the state are doing
for their programs.

At the conclusion, staff would like to have a discussion about how the Scholarship program
should look in the future based on the City’s goals regarding diversity and inclusion.

An update on current Parks and Recreation programming will also happen as a part of this
update.
