16
the board. Several of Officer Xiong’s New Brighton peers joined him at the celebration.

Current part-time Public Safety Officer (PSO) John Thomas (JT) began his full-time
duties as New Brighton’s newest police officer on February 27. He will be paired with
veteran officers during his Field Training Officer (FTO) period that will last through the
end of June. JT is an Irondale graduate and was previously a member of the agency’s
Law Enforcement Exploring Program and Police Reserve Auxiliary.

Officer Boyd, Officer Pyka, and PSO Honkanen received kudos from the Human
Resources Director of Sharrow Lifting Products for their response to a workplace
accident that stated, in part:

“Thank you so much for your quick response to our call on 2/13 to help our employee
who fell on the concrete floor. As you know, he was taken to HCMC with a head injury.
He did end up having surgery late that night to relieve pressure on the brain. He
reported that all signs point to no permanent damage, no memory loss, and no physical
disability. He is so grateful for all that helped in taking care of him and saving him from
further injury. You all had a big part in that. Thank you all for your commitment to the
safety of this community and the sometimes seemingly thankless work you do. Please
know we appreciate you.”
