12 <br /> <br />VII. VOLUNTEER SERVICES <br /> <br />This section contains information on our various volunteer organizations related to Public <br />Safety. This includes the activities of the Public Safety Commission, Police Reserves, <br />Police Explorers, and Volunteers in Public Safety (VIPS). <br /> <br />Activity for the month includes the following: <br /> <br />Fire Captain Barte assisted the Saint Paul Fire Department on Saturday, May 18, at the <br />aXe games which is an event for Fire Explorers from all over the state of Minnesota. <br />Captain Barte provided instruction for attendees on searching for lost persons using the <br />Project Lifesaver equipment. <br /> <br /> <br />VIII. HOMELAND SECURITY AND EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT <br /> <br />This section will review ongoing activities for homeland security and emergency <br />management. This includes the activities of the New Brighton Community Emergency <br />Response Teams (CERT). <br /> <br /> <br />IX. TRAINING <br /> <br />This section will review the training activities of our Public Safety personnel for the <br />month. <br /> <br />All sworn peace officers attended training on the topics of respectful workplace, police <br />body worn cameras, and active shooter response. On both days, police officers <br />collaborated with firefighters and staff from Allina EMS to conduct a simulated response <br />to an active shooter incident at the New Brighton Elementary School. Several public <br />safety volunteers from the Explorers, Reserves, and VIPS served as role players/victims <br />in the training exercise. <br /> <br />Sgt. Sypniewski attended training on the use of ballistic shields. <br /> <br />Officer Farmer convened the quarterly meeting of representatives from New Brighton’s <br />Faith Community Partnership on Wednesday, May 8, at the Public Safety Center. The <br />group welcomed a representative from the Community Support Center in New Brighton <br />and also talked about emergency procedures for houses of worship, especially <br />considering the number of armed attacks on religious facilities throughout the world in <br />recent months. <br /> <br />The Fire Division conducted forcible entry and power tool training at the old New <br />Brighton Elementary School on May 13. Firefighters were able to practice using powered <br />saws to cut through metal and other materials similar to a garage door or motor vehicle; <br />practice opening doors; and breaching walls to escape a fire, if needed.
