Mayor Johnson stated she placed this item on the agenda. She indicated she would like to see the salary for the
Mayor and Council remaining competitive or comparable. She encouraged the next Council to review this
matter in 2021.
Councilmember Jacobsen commented in the State of Minnesota a raise could not be put into place until the
next election. He recalled that the Council salaries were set in 1986. He supported the new Council looking at
how they are compensated and how it keeps up with the workload to run the City. He suggested when City
salaries are considered that City Council rates be included in this rate study.
Mayor Johnson explained she was not talking about big dollars. She stated over a year’s time if the salaries
were brought up to averages this would be an investment of $8,000. Massopust commented for the year 2021
it would be difficult to approve an increase because the preliminary tax levy had already been set. He
recommended the Council and Mayor salaries be considered by the new Council in 2021 through the budgeting
process.
Mayor Johnson asked if the Council had any further comments at this time.
Councilmember Jacobsen discussed the City’s charitable gambling policy and recommended Big Louie’s
contributions to the community be revisited.
Mayor Johnson commented further on the City’s charitable gambling policies and noted St. Maren’s is a
church in Minneapolis. She supported the new Council revisiting this issue as well in 2021.
Councilmember Fynewever encouraged the Council to consider where the new DEI commission would meet
and what it would mean for this group to be invited into the Council Chambers.
Worksession adjourned at 6:17 pm
Respectfully submitted,
Terri Spangrud
City Clerk
