C. Volunteers in Public Safety (VIPS)
No report.
D. Public Safety/Homeland Security Update
Commissioner Lamp inquired about the blue lights now at some intersections. Director Jacobson
stated this allows an officer to be further back and still enforce red light runners.
Director Jacobson reported we concluded a police promotional process for the position of
Sergeant. This position replaces the vacancy created by the retirement of Sgt. Andy Masterman.
Seven officers applied and went through the promotional process. Burt Emerson will be
promoted to Sergeant effective January 1St. He is excited to start.
Firefighter Nick Wagner has resigned. He joined the Fire Division in January but his schedule
was not allowing him to share the time he felt necessary to be a Firefighter for us. We have also
had two recent retirements to include Duane Bousema, who also works at Public Works, and
Tom Roback. Both will be recognized tomorrow night at the Council meeting.
We will be recognizing a resident, Lars Karlson, at tomorrow night's City Council Meetinghwith
a Civilian Service Award. Mr. Karlson helped to detain a felony suspect on September 27t in
his neighborhood (16th Ave SW).
Our two newest officers, Brianna Riedel and Cody Amberg, are nearing the end of their field
training and should be on their own by early to mid-December.
Officer Ted Layton is still on deployment with the National Guard and will be returning in mid -
2015. When he returns, he will replace the VCE,%Went opening that was created when
Burt Emerson was promoted to Sergeant.
Director Jacobson shared with the Commission that Tish Woods has resigned from the Public
Safety Commission. Tish and her husband ave moved into an assisted living community in
Fridley. Ms. Woods says she is sad to leave&e Commission and she gives everyone on the
Public Safety Commission all her best. Council has been notified of this resignation and will
need to appoint someone to replace Tish.
Commissioner Schumann asked about the fraud ring. Director Jacobson reported the search
warrant was done months ago and they found the suspects were making false id's, etc. Detective
Lochen worked with Federal investigators on this case.
Council Liaison
A. Council Report
Council Member Burg reported API is prepared to start building their second building next
spring.
Pulte Homes needs more top soil but will not bring in any more soil until spring. Pulte Homes
reports demand has been high for the homes they are building.
