At the February 10th City Council Meeting, Mr. Bill Hammes of the MN Office of Traffic
Safety was present to talk to the Council about New Brighton's success in traffic safety
and to deliver a new Lidar which was presented to Sgt. Terry Nelson. Council also later
approved a grant for a full time DUI Officer. That presentation was conducted by
Deputy Director Paetznick.
Sgt. Nelson with Mr. Bill Hammes from the MN Office of Traffic Safety
On February 14th at 10:20 am Officer Krebsbach was on patrol northbound on Long Lake
Rd at about 14th St NW when he observed three vehicles including a 2001 Infiniti turn
from eastbound 14th St NW to northbound Long Lake Rd with two of the vehicles
accelerating quickly. The third vehicle, the 2001 Infiniti, was weaving from center lane
divider to the shoulder and following the vehicle ahead of it very closely. All vehicles
including the Infiniti continued on Long Lake Rd and the Infiniti continued to drive
erratically. Officer Krebsbach initiated a traffic stop of the Infiniti on Long Lake Rd near
Poppyseed and the vehicle pulled into the Irondale High School parking lot. The driver
was identified as Brett Konecny, 29 years of age from Mounds View. He smelled very
strongly of alcoholic beverages and had extremely bloodshot and watery eyes. He had
difficulty finding his driver's license in his wallet and admitted to drinking "one beer".
Due to the extreme cold, no field sobriety tests were administered but he did fail to give a
proper breath sample on a preliminary breath test and was arrested for DUI. He agreed
to a breath test which later resulted in a .24 alcohol concentration. Due to the high test
and aprevious DUI conviction in 2008, he was booked on the enhanced charges of DUI
in the 2nd degree, a gross misdemeanor. CN 15002128.
On February 15th at 2:20 am Officer Wakasugi was westbound on 1694 at Long Lake Rd
and observed a 2009 Toyota Corolla passing other vehicles at a high rate of speed.
Officer Wakasugi paced the Toyota at about 75 MPH in the 60 MPH zone. Officer
Wakasugi stopped the vehicle for the speed violation on westbound 694 at Silver Lake
5
