Rn•INEW <br /> 1U BRIGHTON <br /> building tomorrow today <br /> Council Worksession <br /> October 12, 2021 <br /> 5:00 pm <br /> Present: Mayor Kari Niedfeldt-Thomas <br /> Councilmember Abdullahi Abdulle <br /> Councilmember Graeme Allen <br /> Councilmember Pam Axberg (arrived at 5:05 p.m.) <br /> Councilmember Emily Dunsworth <br /> Absent: <br /> Staff in Attendance: Devin Massopust <br /> Guests in Attendance: CPY Executive Director Mary Stewart and Chairman for CPY Brian White <br /> Update from Community Partners with Youth (CPY) <br /> Massopust stated Mary Stewart and Brian White were in attendance to provide the Council with an update <br /> from CPY. <br /> Mary Stewart, Executive Director for CPY, thanked the Council for their time. She shared all that has been <br /> happening in the community noting CPY was here to equalize opportunity for youth by reducing economic and <br /> social barriers. She explained 90% of the students served by CPY were receiving free/reduced lunch. She <br /> estimated 400 to 500 youth were served each year and described how CPY served the community throughout <br /> the pandemic by providing activity kits, weekly meals and a distance learning support center. The success of <br /> the distance learning center was further discussed, along with how CPY works to equip their youth for future <br /> success. She explained how key partnerships were to CPY. <br /> Councilmember Abdulle asked how students qualified for free or reduced lunch. Ms. Stewart discussed how <br /> students qualified for free or reduced lunch through the school district by meeting State qualifications. <br /> Brian White, Chairman of the Board for CPY, stated he was proud of the great work being done by CPY and <br /> how they were serving youth in need in the community. He reviewed the 2019-2020 CPY budget and <br /> discussed CPY's revenue sources, which included partners in the community. He thanked the City of New <br /> Brighton for their continued support. He discussed the crime statistics in New Brighton and noted there was a <br /> direct correlation in the reduction of youth crime once CPY began working with the youth in the community. <br /> He commented on the grants that would be applied for with the assistance of JMA Associates. He described <br /> the next steps CPY would be taking noting support was needed more now than ever in order to work towards <br /> becoming self-sustaining. <br /> Councilmember Abdulle requested further information regarding the fees that are collected by CPY. Ms. <br /> Stewart discussed who fees were collected by CPY for their summer programming pre-COVID and noted this <br /> was done on a sliding scale. Mr. White commented further on how CPY has had a reduction in fees collected <br /> in 2020 and 2021 due to COVID. <br /> Councilmember Axberg stated her son participated in a summer of activities at CPY some years back and had <br />
