The exact work and scope of the Commission will be <br /> explored and established with the help of CultureBrokers. City Code currently says that the <br /> Public Safety Commission will address issues of Human Rights, including"participation in <br /> regional human rights organizations and endeavors" and to "monitor and advise the City <br /> Council on efforts to create equal opportunity and eliminate discrimination". Staff believe that <br /> with the creation of this new Commission those duties should be brought from Public Safety to <br /> the Inclusion Commission as it will be more focused on such efforts. Staff commented further <br /> on Ordinance and recommended approval. <br /> Councilmember Axberg stated she wholeheartedly supported the Ordinance.She asked why the City Council <br /> was being asked to put this Ordinance in place now prior to working with CultureBrokers.City Manager <br /> Massopust reported the internal staffing goal would be to have the commission established and understood <br /> that more specific details would be worked out going forward. <br /> Mayor Niedfeldt-Thomas believed it would be important for the City to have an Ordinance in place <br /> establishing the Commission prior to hiring a DEI staff member.She was of the opinion this action would <br /> build confidence in the community. <br /> Councilmember Dunsworth commented it does seem a little bit out of order. However,the Council has been <br /> talking about creating this group since 2018. She appreciated the fact that this was a concrete step the City <br /> could take right now on the one-year anniversary of George Floyd's murder. She believed the City has gone <br /> too long not taking action.She was pleased the City was going to start doing something and community <br /> comment could be taken. She wanted to see the City walking the talk. She noted this was a broader issue <br /> than public safety. She believed this was a whole City issue that should be built into everything the City was <br /> thinking about. <br /> Councilmember Abdulle stated he was happy to see this before the Council as this was the first small step in <br /> the many steps the City had to take. <br /> Mayor Niedfeldt-Thomas asked when CultureBrokers and staff would anticipate discussing revisions to this <br /> Ordinance and when commissioners would be seated onto this Commission. City Manager Massopust <br /> discussed the proposed timeline noting this work would be accomplished in the next five months,along with <br /> hiring a DEI staff member.
