Councilmember Dunsworth feared that there would be inconsistency in these permits if variances were
granted. She understood the resident that brought this issue to the Council's attention has not been in
compliance with City Code for quite some time. She stated at this time she was leaning towards keeping the
number of fowl allowed in the City at six per property.
Councilmember Abdulle agreed.
Mayor Niedfeldt-Thomas suggested staff reach out to the League of Minnesota Cities regarding the keeping of
fowl and endangered fowl, specifically.
Councilmember Allen stated he has heard from residents they would like to have more than six chickens. He
explained if this portion of City Code were to allow for a variance, more requests may be brought to the City.
Councilmember Dunsworth commented she would like to better understand how many complaints the City has
received in the past four or five years for chickens and fowl. She indicated she was not interested in relitigating
this matter. She believed that the Council made a thoughtful decision regarding this topic when the code was
approved previously. She stated she would like more time to think about this issue prior to making a formal
decision.
Massopust indicated he would put this topic on a future worksession agenda and would report back on what he
learns from the League of Minnesota Cities and what other cities are doing.
Worksession adjourned at 6:23 pm
Respectfully submitted,
Terri Spangrud
City Clerk
