<br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br />MINUTES <br />New Brighton Equity Commission <br />Regular Meeting – June 16, 2022 <br />6:30 p.m. <br /> <br /> <br />V. Business Discussion Item <br /> <br />A. Minnesota Human Department of Human Rights (MDHR) Presentation – Audel <br />Shokohzadeh, Community Engagement Director <br /> <br />Massopust stated the City of New Brighton Equity Commission, as part of its work, will focus on <br />supporting human rights concerns in the City of New Brighton. To adequately address future <br />issues, Audel Shokohzadeh from the Minnesota Department of Human Rights (MDHR) will <br />address the New Brighton Equity Commission with information supporting human rights <br />initiatives in New Brighton and other local communities. <br /> <br />Audel Shokohzadeh, Community Engagement Director for MDHR, introduced himself to the <br />Commission. He discussed what civil rights people have, what the investigative process was if <br />someone was mistreated, and offered helpful tips on what to do in the event a person is treated <br />unfairly. He reviewed the vision, mission and goals for the MDHR which included creating a <br />world where everyone can lead lives full of dignity and joy and to make Minnesota <br />discrimination free. He reported the Minnesota Human Rights Acts states discrimination <br />threatens the rights and privileges of the inhabitants of this state and menaces the institutions and <br />foundations of democracy. He discussed how MDHR enforces the Minnesota Human Rights Act. <br />The protected classes in Minnesota were reviewed, along with several racial discrimination cases <br />that occurred in the State of Minnesota. He commented further on how to report discrimination <br />events to the MDHR. <br /> <br />Discussion included: <br /> The Commission discussed what civil rights means to them. <br /> The strength of the State’s Human Rights Act was discussed. <br /> The group discussed how to resolve Neighbor to neighbor conflicts. <br /> The human rights cases that have occurred in the region were reviewed and it was noted <br />the numbers for the past three years are low. <br /> Helpful tips after an incident of discrimination were discussed. <br /> The group discussed how to resolve issues that occur at City Hall or during City <br />sponsored events. Mr. Shokohzadeh encouraged the City to have policies in place to <br />address behavior concerns. Director Fink reported the Community Center has <br />membership guidelines in place. <br /> Mr. Shokohzadeh commented on what other human rights commissions in the State were <br />doing well.
