HEAD'S APPROVAL: Grant Fernelius, Director of Communit
MANAGER'S REVIEW/RECOMMENDATION:

No comments to su

Comments attached

EXPLANATION:

On November 22, 2005, the Council awarded a contract for demolition of various Northwest
Quadrant buildings to Wickenhauser Excavating, Contract documents included a thorough
summary of the historical record of construction and the results of prior testing for asbestos
and other hazardous materials. Nevertheless, several additional areas containing hazardous
substances have been encountered during the excavation work to date.

The attachments detail the buildings where additional asbestos-containing materials have been
encountered, and the contractor thereby has incurred additional costs. The largest of these
areas is the Kilkenny property, where tenant occupancy during the time the contract
documents were prepared did not allow the destructive testing necessary to complete an
assessment.

The contractor is proposing to be paid an additional $43,336.00 to address these conditions.
Barr Engineering, which is managing the project on behalf of the City, finds these charges to
be reasonable, and recommends payment.

RECOMMENDATION:

Approve the attached Change Order #1 covering additional work on the Northwest Quadrant
Phase " demolition project.

'l_"'~;p' $ g~

David W.
