<br /> <br />which included compliance inspections, investigations, and granting funds for EMS regional <br />programs. He commented on the primary service area for Allina North Metro and local <br />government rules. He discussed the difference between advanced life support versus basic <br />life support for ambulance service providers. The role of the EMS Medical Director was <br />described. He reviewed how EMS services were financed, noting New Brighton residents <br />were not taxed for this service. The organizational chart for Allina was discussed, along with <br />Allina’s ACE and CAAS accreditations. He commented on the different types of external <br />education and training his responders receive. He stated he appreciated the partnership Allina <br />has with the New Brighton Public Safety Department and asked for comments or questions. <br /> <br />Discussion included: <br /> Mr. Matteson provided the Commission with information on how EMS workers <br />handle situations where people do not want to get in an ambulance. <br /> Mr. Matteson discussed the number of individuals that are brought to the VA on a <br />daily basis. <br /> It was noted the north metro has seven to fifteen ambulances working at any given <br />time. <br /> Mr. Matteson commented on the number of EMT’s the Public Safety Department has <br />on staff. <br /> The Commission thanked Mr. Matteson for his detailed presentation. <br /> <br />VI. Reports and Updates <br /> <br />A. Allina Health – Dave Matteson <br /> <br />Dave Matteson provided the Commission with an update from Allina Health. He reviewed <br />the calls for service numbers for September and October, along with year to date numbers for <br />New Brighton. He indicated the community had roughly five calls for service day. He <br />discussed how difficult it was to recruit dispatchers, EMT’s and paramedics. He reported <br />Allina was offering tuition grants at this time for individuals interested in becoming a <br />paramedic or EMT. <br /> <br />B. Public Safety Update – Director Paetznick <br /> <br />Director Paetznick provided the Commission with an update from the Public Safety <br />Department. He reported this week was Winter Weather Hazard Awareness Week as well as <br />being National Crash Responder Week. He encouraged residents to drive carefully this <br />winter and to give responders space when responding to calls on the freeway. He commented <br />on the number of crashes the City has on a yearly basis. He explained he attended the <br />International Association of Chiefs of Police Conference in Dallas, Texas last month where <br />the department received a Leadership in Community Policing Award. He discussed the Santa <br />Cop program, which has been helping families in need since 1995. He described training he <br />received regarding lithium ion batteries, noting they were a rising cause of fires in some <br />communities. He reported Mark Suggs left the City as the DEI Coordinator and the City <br />would be rehiring for this position. <br /> <br />Commissioner Wagner requested Director Paetznick provide the Commission with <br />information on the new traffic signals on Silver Lake Road.
