<br />• Mayor Niedfeldt-Thomas supported the Equity Commission and Public Safety <br />Commission holding a joint meeting, noting a specific outcome should be set for this <br />meeting. <br />• The Commission wanted to learn more about the training and use of force techniques <br />officers were trained with along with better understanding the policies that were in place. <br /> <br />C. Community Engagement Discussion <br /> <br />Schlieu reported creating an equitable city is ultimately about ensuring that all residents feel safe, <br />welcomed, and valued. Equity Commissioners acknowledge the importance of engaging with <br />residents and receiving feedback to effectively accomplish that goal. Connecting with residents <br />also allows us to tackle the equity issues most important to them. <br /> <br />Discussion included: <br />• Vice Chair Miller stated if the Commission wanted to plan a listening session, this could <br />be discussed over the next several meetings. <br />• The Commission supported holding a listening session at multi-family developments in <br />order to make the session accessible to this population. <br /> <br />VI. Vice Chair Update – Kami Miller <br /> <br />A. What have we noticed around the City? <br /> <br />Miller stated she would like to know what Commissioners have noticed around the City. <br /> <br />Discussion included: <br />• Staff noted the Equity Commission was signed up to attend the Wednesday, June 21 <br />farmers market from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. <br />• It was noted an open house regarding the Just Deeds initiative would be held on <br />Thursday, June 29 at the Community Center. <br /> <br />VII. City Staff Update – Hue Schlieu, DEI Coordinator <br /> <br />Schlieu reported staff received a critical corridors grant from Ramsey County and this grant <br />would be used to assist the City with completing a parking study. She explained the Juneteenth <br />concert was well attended and the performers were excellent. She stated Juneteenth was now a <br />State holiday which meant City offices would be closed on Monday, June 19. She noted she met <br />with the faith community leaders to discuss potential partnerships. She reported she signed up for <br />the racial equity dividends index and she was excited about this. She commented on the areas <br />residents can provide DEI feedback on the City’s website. <br /> <br /> <br /> <br />VIII. City Council Update – Kari Niedfeldt-Thomas <br /> <br />Mayor Niedfeldt-Thomas provided the Commission an update from the City Council. She <br />commented on the Sunny Square Park ribbon cutting ceremony. She stated the next concert <br />event would be held on Thursday, July 13. She explained Open to Business would be holding <br />officer hours at City Hall from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. on fourth Tuesday of the month. She <br />reported the Council recently approved the sale of Block B within the New Brighton Exchange. <br />She noted the City Council would meet next on Tuesday, June 27. She invited the public to <br />attend the chalk walk on Saturday, June 17.
