I

I

I

Council Meeting Minutes
July 25, 2000

Page 6

Council Business. continued

Finance Director Margaret Egan presented an emergency change in the polling location
for Precincts 4 and 7. Pike Lake School serves as the polling place for Precincts 4 and 7,
however, due to the remodeling of the school the following reassignments are proposed:
Precinct 4 reassigned on a temporary basis to Precinct 6 (Salem Baptist Church) and
Precinct 7 reassigned on a temporary basis to Precinct 3 (Christ the King Lutheran
Church). Residents will be notified through postcards and newspaper notices.

The City may want to be more active when redistricting is undertaken as part ofthe 2000
Census and attempt to have New Brighton all in one legislative district. Under the current
plan, Precinct 7 exists solely to segregate District 52A voters from the remainder of the
community which is assigned to District 528. Administration costs are higher and voter
convenience is reduced by maintaining the additional precinct.

Motion by Hoffman, seconded by Moore-Sykes, to WAIVE THE READING AND
ADOPT THE RESOLUTION DECLARING AN EMERGENCY CHANGE IN THE
POLLING PLACE.

5 Ayes - 0 Nayes, Motion Carried.

Announcements and Updates

Council noted the many donations received toward the purchase ofthe Thermal Imaging
Equipment for use by the Fire Department.

Council Business

Emergency Change in
Precincts
Report 00-1 80
Resolution 00-071

Announccments and
Updates

Thermal Imaging
Equipment

Fulton noted that effective August 1, 2000, the Police and Fire Departments would Public Safety Dept.
undergo a structural reorganization which would combine both departments to be renamed
as the Public Safety Department. In recognition of the demands of the volunteer Fire
Department as well as leadership and responsibilities, the City has established a full-time
position to oversee fire services which will named Deputy Public Safety Director - Fire
Services. Also, the Police Chief will undergo enhanced assignments which will be
reflected by rcnaming of that position to Public Safety Director. The coordination of both
departments is essential and the changes will be advantageous to the community.

The Stockyard Days/Antique Car Run events will begin occurring the week of August 7.
