I

I

I

Council Meeting Minutes
January 26, 1999

Page 4

1999 State of the City Address. continued

colleagues throughout the country has caused us to realize how crucial this effort will be.
I hope that we can mobilize our collective resources to ensure that our children receive
the family and community support they need to become productive and participating
citizens. We will be spending time this weekend and throughout the year putting together
plans, in collaboration with all of you and the many organizations already engaged.
Those plans will focus on how we can better invest our City resources.

My specific hopes for this coming year include:
· An after school program for middle school youth at Salem Baptist patterned after
the Community Partners for Youth venture hosted at Christ the King
. Direct involvement of teens in City business, helping us to refocus our programs
and facilities for their use

These, again, are but a few of the many tasks to be completed this year. I know we can
complete them. I know that the state of our City will be even greater when we do.

Lest anyone think that New Brighton doesn't know when to relax and enjoy life, I've
proposed that we have a family oriented community "Millennium Party" on New Years
Eve at the Family Service Center. You may have missed the raging debate as to whether
the year 2000 is the first year of the next millennium or the last year of the current
millennium. Frankly, I don't really care. So, let's party hearty on December 31, and,
let's celebrate all through the year 2000 and conclude the festivities on January 1, 2001!
Just in case we encounter Y2K problems, we will have a standby generator available to
ensure that the heat and lights stay on. So, plan now to join us. Let us know if you would
like to help plan the full range of activities and attractions we'd like to see.

In summary, life is good for most of us in New Brighton. Our challenge now is to
continue our success and to reach out to those who for a variety of reasons haven't kept
up. We have the talent, we have the resources, we have the heart. We can and will do it!

Thank you once again for your support and encouragement. Thanks also to Matt Fulton
and our City staff for your hard work and commitment. Finally, please join me in
recognizing our other partners, Arly, Char and Steve. Thanks for your help. I am
looking forward to continuing to serve as your Mayor.

Alan Kay, the inventor of the Graphical User Interface, commented that "the best way to
predict the future is to invent it." I know the Council members are also ready and eager
to take on the challenges ahead. Please join us in making our city even better as we
invent our future in our City of New Brighton. Thank You, Bob Benke, Mayor

Special Order of Business

Motion by Larson, seconded by Samuelson, to WAIVE THE READING AND ADOPT
THE RESOLUTION ACCEPTING A $100.00 DONATION FROM HAROLD AND
CATHLEEN RADKE TO BE USED BY THE POLICE AND FIRE
DEPARTMENTS.

5 Ayes - 0 Nayes, Motion Carried.

State of the City
Address

Special Order of
Business

Radke Donation
Resolution 99-004
