Childs noted his unhappiness with the Board's decision and feels the issue should be studied before changing Legislation. The County Board is not unanimous in the concept of a single suburban facility. Benke noted in the future city, county, and school services will be more integrated, but smaller service facilities may be preferred versus one large facility. Childs and Chief Kelley attended a meeting with the Ramsey County Sheriff and St. Paul Police Chief on a proposal to merge police departments in Ramsey County. Positive elements of their proposal related to centralizing functions such as: communications. dispatch, crime lab, internal affairs, bomb squad, special weapons team, and hazardous incident response. All of these functions require specialized training and equipment which may be provided efficiently by a larger organization. One issue New Brighton and other cities are skeptical about is a combined patrol unit, mainly because St. Paul's Police Department is much more expensive on a per capita basis and the suburbs feel they would be subsidizing St. Paul's patrol force. Childs feels research is needed before a decision to consolidate occurs. The City of Lauderdale has noted a need for administrative support services which New Brighton may be able to provide on a contract basis. The public informational meeting for consideration of renaming of Old Highway 8 will be held on April 2 at 7:00 p.m. A second meeting with area mayors, administrators, school board, commissioners, and representatives will be held April 27. The first meeting went well and ideas for future collaborations were discussed. The Town Hall Meeting will be held April 13 at Irondale High School. The Ramsey County League of local Governments will meet on April 1 7. Parks will be notified of the possible senior citizen volunteer work force. Benke noted that Council and department heads have met and will be mtJating again to determine strategies for the budgets cuts. Motion by Williams, seconded by larson, to ADJOURN THE MEETING.
