I

I

I

Council Meeting Minutes
January 23, 1990

Page 4

Special Order of Business, continued

The deli very of City servi ces has also been a successful effort.
I might suggest that Councilmember Steve Larson has been our "bird
dog", chasing problems and checking into things allover the city.
Regardless of the corner of the City, Steve dug into the various
issues that needed to be looked at from a Council perspective,
Councilmember Larson has done a noble job in this effort. Along the
way we dealt with hazardous materials response, and we obtained a
new rescue vehicle to protect the health, safety and welfare of our
residents. The Finance Department came through with a budget that
resulted in no net dollar increase in our property tax levy. We
compl eted the rebui 1 di ng of Veteran I s Park and made some major
changes to Hidden Oaks Park, We made major advances in the Long
Lake Road area along with the Long Lake Road reconstructi on by
Ramsey County. We made major advances in the construction of the
GAC Facility, and completed and revamped our comprehensive plan.

In the environment we also had some good things happen, with the
Household Hazardous Waste Collection Project and the work by the
League of Women Voters and the Environmental Quality Commission in
prepari ng us to make some tough choi ces in waste management and
recycling, which we will be dealing with in the next few weeks.

One of our highlights was the effort of the Human Rights Commission
1 ed by Charlotte Samuelson and Samantha Orduno. The revi ta 1 i zed
Human Rights Commission sponsored the First Annual Human Rights Open
House --- an excellent program! I wish more of us could have been
there to hear the words of Stephen Cooper, who remi nded us that "our
country was founded by people with differences who wanted to use
those differences to blend and forge a stronger country, built on
those differences and the talents that each of us brings, and not
emphasize the differences that may separate us." It reminds us too
that we are not immune from the problems in the human rights area.
We've seen problems all around us and I suspect that there are a few
in New Brighton and we need to be alert to that.

I think of the highlights and the celebrations we worked so hard
at. The Ice Fishing Contest, Stockyard Days, Antique Car Run, and
Squash Festival. And then too, the participation of all our
volunteers on the Boards and Commissions who advise so ably.

S~ecialOrder of
Business

Mayor's State of the
City Address
