I

I

I

Council Meeting Minutes
January 23, 1990

Page 7

Special Order of Business, continued

With all those tasks and challenges I personally am looking forward
to a exciting era in 1990, as we solve the problems of governance
in New Brighton. Councilmember Roger Williams picked out the key
word in hi s i naugura 1 address as Pres i dent of the Ramsey County
League of Local Governments, when he said it is time for us to
emphasize collaboration. We started that with the Quad Cities, and
we talked and will be meeting very soon with the schools again both
District 621 and hopefully District 282, We talked to Ramsey County
and we will talk more. We talked with the State and we need to keep
talking. Most of all I think we need to re-emphasize and rejuvenate
our efforts to talk wi th and co 11 aborate wi th our ci ti zens and
bus i ness commun ity. We made progress, but more can be done. I
think too, we have to emphasize communication as part of that
collaboration.

As Councilmember Arlyn Gunderman suggested we have to come to some
agreement as to what our goals are and how we hope to achieve them.
I think if we can do that, much of what we do will make sense to
more people and we will have an easier time as we struggle to get
there. Part of our communication effort is to rebuild the awareness
that our residents have of what's happening here in the City. I
think we have to challenge our media representatives to be here more
often and be asking us the tough questions that we need to be asking
ourselves, and to reflect on our responsibil ity to answer those
questions, honestly and fairly, so our residents know what's going
on.

The Council and Staff need to continue building on the spirit of
trust and cooperation we have generated these past several years.
I think the key part of our success here is being able to work
together without an i mos it; es and wi thout j ea 1 ous i es and wi thout
competition, but all working together for the best things that we
can do for all our residents. I think too we need to continue to
build on the need and opportunities for our residents and civic
group leaders and our volunteers to participate in everything that
we do. Because it is from that group, hopefull y, that our new
leaders will come when those of us here now decide eventually and
hopefully, to go on to other things. Those new leaders need to be
involved now so that when we are ready to go on they will be ready
to pick-up the challenge.

The next thing we continue to need to do and comment on is to re-
emphasize, and build on the enthusiasm of our residents to
participate. We have fun doing what we're doing. The Antique Car
Run, Stockyard Days, Ice Fishing Contest, and Squash Festival are
good examples of things we can do as a community to get people out
and have fun together. To emphasize that we are a community and not
just hiding in our own homes.

Special Order of
Business

Mayor's State of the
City Address
