I

I

I

Council Meeting Minutes
January 23, 1990

Page 8

Special Order of Business, continued

As we go about these cha 11 enges, and as we go about the task of
governance it is important for' all of us, whether we a r'e on the
Councilor in the audience or in oUr' neighborhoods, to maintain a
perspective on what we are all about. As Stephen Cooper' suggested,
we need to incorporate and build on the differences that exist among
us. I have said before and I continue to suggest that if all of us
were of the same opinion, size, weight and experience, we would only
need one of us here and the rest of us would be superfluous.

It is important that we continue to identify oUr' questions,
differences, exper'iences, and talents so we can put together a
package and a team that can best meet all of our needs. As we do
that I think we have to recognize that we are all human and will
make mistakes, but we have to learn to deal with them and learn from
those mistakes and to tolerate the mistakes of others. Obviously,
some of us would like to think we are perfect, but we are not.

With all of that I think of Judy Goepel IS efforts and Stockyard Days
and Antique Car Run and everything else we do. I think we need, as
we have done with our "gold stars", to celebrate our successes and
learn from our failures.

In closing, I would summarize 1989 as an excellent year for New
Bri ghton. I th ink it I S prepared us well and the people who are
involved for the challenges for 1990.

As we face those challenges, I would like to thank all of you, the
staff led by Dave Childs, Council, and all the residents and
volunteers who are been working with us these last several years and
who wi 11 be wi th us in the comi ng decade. I waul d 1 i ke to thank you
for your efforts and for your participation. I would like to also
ask that you continue. It is obvious we can't do it alone. We need
residents and volunteers with talent and time to get involved and
take advantage of the assets, programs, and projects that we have
here in New Brighton.

Not only that, but get your neighbors involved. Because when two
work, the load is only half as large" The more people we get
involved, the easier it will be and the more success we can enjoy.
I think too that if you get involved you will soon learn, as we
have, that New Brighton truly is a City that works for anybody that
wants to be here and who wants to share and work.

With that challenge, I would close. I would 1 ike to encourage
everybody to share in the bounty and fun and the excitement that I
see coming-up in the City of New Brighton in 1990. Council, thank
you again for your help, and staff and residents. 1990 is going to
be a great challenge, let's get on with i~.

Special Order of
Business

Mayor's State of the
City Address
