7r?bC
January 28,1999
Mr. Kevin Locke
Director of Community Development
City of New Brighton
803 Fifth Ave. N.W.
New Brighton, Mn. 55112
Dear Mr. Locke:
Thank you for showing us the plans for Industrial Equities` next project to be located on
the adjoining property to the south. This afforded us the opportunity to address our
concerns to the Mayor and members of the City Council. Just to make sure we are in
harmony with those concerns, I have listed them as follows:
1.) All crops grown in any greenhouse depend upon natural direct sunlight, thats why
greenhouses are made of either glass, or clear poly. To block any sunlight on the south
side with a 39 concrete wall, effectively, and surely puts us out of the growing business.
Our greenhouses generate 65% of our gross volume and 80% of our net profit. This is
one of two worst nightmares for a greenhouse operation.
2.) The other nightmare is artificial light pollution. Over 50% of ornamental crops
grown in the world are day-length sensitive, meaning they will only bloom under natural
day length conditions. Less than 1 foot candle of light during the night hours will cause
plants such as poinsettias, chrysanthemums, begonias, kalanchoes to delay blooming or
bloom erratically. A constant source of fight pollution will keep them in a vegetative state
and they will never bloom. Thats why greenhouses are always orientated away from any
artificial light source, such as roadways, streetlights, etc.
3.) There already is an increase in vandalism on our property (due to a higher visibility
on the north, east and south sides of our property), and surely with another building with
a large paved area, there will be an increase in hot rodding, skateboarding, groups of kids
wandering at all hours of the night. It's already at an unbearable noise level during the
summer months to the point that we cannot keep windows open nor expect to get any
sleep. These same group of kids are wandering around our property, or cutting through
our property, yelling and screaming from 1:00am to 4:00am. As we've stated for years,
and were promised, we need fencing.
