<br />I <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />Council Meeting Minutes <br />May 24, 1988 <br /> <br />Council Business <br /> <br />Benke received the 1987 Annual Report and indicated staff's <br />reaction report would be available to the council shortly. <br /> <br />Because the speaker for the petitioners was not present, Benke <br />accepted the petition. <br /> <br />Sinda stated the petitioners have brought some issues to the <br />city's attention relating to Bell Pole and possible toxic con- <br />tamination; the EQC has had a meeting and gave recommendations <br />which have been discussed with the Minnesota Pollution Control <br />Agency (MPCA), Bell Pole, and the petitioners. The city staff and <br />EQC will work very closely with the MPCA; the EQC is composed of <br />people knowledgeable in environmental issues; a meeting has been <br />scheduled with the EQC, MPCA, Bell Pole, and the petitioners on <br />Tuesday, June 7th to discuss the issues and to discuss what is <br />being, can be, done to handle them. <br /> <br />Benke indicated Greenpeace does not want to put Bell Pole out of <br />business but to require them to use less toxic substances; need to <br />discuss why it is critical they use the chemicals they are using <br />when there are alternatives; suggested that, given the nature of <br />the concerns and the highly complex and technical discussions we <br />will probably encounter, there will be differences of technical <br />opinions and asked participants not to lose the perspective of <br />what we are trying to accomplish.
