DEPARTMENTAL UPDATE

Adult Special Program - Basic And Continuing Education

This has been a very significant year for adult education programs in Mounds
View. For the first time all classes could be conducted in one centralized
location, a site which is adult-centered rather than a distant elementary or
secondary school. Th~ fact that adult students could attend classes in a
community oriented building where many other services are available and where
people of ?ll ag~s participated is a distinct advantage for these classes.

Greater numbers of students were served this year and more classes were offered
than ever before. Previously, adult education classes were available only
during evening hours. This year however, Adult Basic Education (ABE), English-
As-A-Second Language (ESL), and GED classes were held Monday-Friday, from 8:30 -
12:30, as well as on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. Classes in the Adult Diploma
Program expanded from two nights a week to include two afternoons also. The ESL
class was a new offering for Mounds View.

Student Enrollment

Response to both morning and evening classes has been excellent.
is a break down of student participation in these programs:

Adult Basic Education (ABE) 55 Students

English As A Second Language (ESL) 37 Students

GED 62 Students

Adult Diploma 90 Students

Total 244 Students

The following

19-56 yrs.
19-55 yrs.
17 - 67 y rs .
20-29 yrs.

of age
of age
of age
of age

The staff for adult education programs increased from nine in the previous year
to 17 .this year.

During this year, development of the 309 ADVANCE Diploma Project began. Students
will be inrolled at the Community Resource Center this fall.

This was also the first year for operation of the Career Clinic, a collaborative
project of Mounds View Community Education and Lakewood Community College. Person-
alized Career and personal development services were provided by two counselors
to 141 adults at the Community Resource Center. The Career Clinic also conducted
17 workshops at this site.

On May 30, the first GED graduation ceremony for students receiving their Equiva-
lency Certificates from the State Department was held. 27 adults,. participated in
the evening's program and over 125 friends and family members attended.

English-As-A-Second Language Elementary/Secondary

English-As-A-Second Language for the Mounds View School District served 39 Secon-
dary and 43 Elementary students from many countries. In addition, ten kindergar-
ten students were served in their home school. Countries included were Vietna~
Laos, Korea, Iran, Thailand, Taiwan, Saudi Arabia, Nicaragua, Turkey, Japan, France,
