t
s
Page 2.
VN-183
actually two institutional uses operating from the same building
while the ordinance permits just one sign for the property.
Staff suggested that the applicant approach the church about
the possibility of erecting a single, new wall sign displaying
both the church name and the name of the Montessori School.
It is our understanding that this could not be worked out.
One thing not clear from the application is the intended
location of the ground sign. It appears that the applicant
would lily to locate the sign somewhere between the two drive-
ways servicing the site. There is not sufficient room in this
area to place a ground sign meeting the 10 foot setback require-
ment. There is, however, sufficient space to the south of the
southern driveway to place a ground sign meeting setback require-
ments.
The practical difficulty confronting the school is that without
a permanent solution being worked out through the variance
request, the only signing available would be for a seasonal sign.
A seasonal sign permit can be issued only once each year and is
valid for only a 30 day period. The school has used this option
the last two years but have indicated they are having problems
with identification and enrollment.
As the,~xbning code shows an intent to provide institutions
with signing, the present request would not appear to be in-
consistent with the intent of the sign ordinance.
STAFF RECOMMENDATION
Staff recommends that VN-183 be approved by waiving the reading
and adopting the attached resolution.
A
James F.
