,....,..~..~.I'I

I

I

III

Council Meeting Minutes
August 11, 1987

Motion by Blomquist, seconded by Gunderman, to WAIVE THE READING
AND ADOPT A RESOLUTION DECLARING CERTAIN CITY STREETS IN THE VI-
CINITY OF IRONDALE HIGH SCHOOL AS LIMITED OR PROHIBITED PARKING.

4 Ayes - 0 Nayes, Motion Carried

Sinda stated staff received a recommendation from Ed Walhof
regarding Stockyard Days, Inc. and the funding of their celebra-
tion. Following receipt of the information, there was a meeting
at which the use of charitable gambling income was discussed for
some of the funding; the Chamber of Commerce would be interested
in raising dollars through pull-tabs in legal establishments to
fund the non-profit needs of Stockyard Days, Inc.

Walhof stated the original proposal came with some frustrations,
but in order to affect the community events there seemed to be no
other way than to come to the city for funds. Last Thursday the
informal committee discussed the use of gambling funds at which
time Plan B was manifested.

Walhof requested that a part-time person be funded by the city
with a budget (mailing, advertising, etc.) for that person to
function; and advised that a joint venture between the Chamber of
Commerce and one of the community events will be put together with
a permit application coming to the city in the near future, which
would enable the Chamber to sponsor community events to some de-
gree.

As a member of the informal committee, Walhof asked the city to
set aside funds for a part-time marketing person to market the
community, have continuity from one year to the next, and manage
the volunteer staff for community events.

Gunderman extended a thank you and feels the Chamber of Commerce
should go with Plan B; and believes a part-time employee, if bud-
get permits, is a good idea.

Benke believes council would very much like to have a part-time
person whose services are important enough to be permanent with
the commitment of the city; appreciates, supports, and recommends
city types of activities.

Blomquist believes Plan B is the best way to go and asked what ac-
tion council needs to take to implement same.

Benke stated the council needs to direct staff to continue working
with Walhof and members of the committee to outline the duties of
that position and how we will incorporate expenditures into the
city's budget.

Motion by Blomquist, seconded by Gunderman, to DIRECT STAFF TO DE-
VELOP A PROPOSED POSITION AND FUNDING FOR AN EVENTS COORDINATOR.

Williams noted this action also parallels the thoughts of the Mar-
keting Committee.

4 Ayes - 0 Nayes, Motion Carried

Page 7

City Funds for
Community Events
Report 87-204
