2.8941' ,
-- _1
Q
BULt.ETINS ... NEON .SIGNS ... NEON DISPZ.AYS
3I5 Washington Avenue North
MINNEAPOLIS, MINN. 55401
July 17, 1984
City of New Brighton
803 Sth.Ave. N.W.
New Brighton, MN 55112
To Whom It May Concern,
In late April as you well know a storm passed through the New Brighton
area. In so doing the storm caused considerable damage to the Tom Thumb
Store at 375 Silver Lake Road. Before the storm this store had a 5 x 35
neon roof-top sign, and a 5 x 7 pylon sign.
The day after the storm. Kaufman Outdoor Advertising Company erected
a 4 x 24 single-face plastic sign on the roof where the old sign was orig-
ionally. We also replaced the .damaged S x 7 pylon sign with a duplicate
sign.
Since that time the city has informed us that the roof-top sign is
non-conforming. We have complied with all the requests and demands of the
city which included removal of the roof-top sign and supplying the city
with pictures and proposals for signage on the building.
The people at Tom Thumb and we agree that for-the store to continue
to flourish in the city it must have identification on the building. It
is my opinion after thirty-seven years in the business that the irregular
shape of the building details that there is no readily available signage
area: on the building that will conform to the city's criteria.
The store has existed in New Brighton for at least twenty years,
paid alot of taxes, and has been a great service to the community. There-
. .fore we suggest an alternative which is self explanatory once you study
the enclosed sketch. ~ _
This 3 x 18 single-face plastic sign conforms to all city demands
in my opinion. The city of New Brighton agrees except for one item. They
contend that the bottom of the sign projects more than eighteen inches from
the wall. If that is the case we respect their opinion and ask for a var-
iance on this small item claiming unique circumstance taking into account
the shape of the building plus undue hardship for none of this would have
taken place if not for the storm that ravaged New Brighton.
The people at Tom Thumb are confident that you will make a fair
and just decision in this matter. Please keep us informed as to the
outcome.-
T an You
r7~'(i'
Daniel J,
_ 1
t
