EXTRACT FROM MINUTES <br />NEW BRIGHTON PLANNING `COMMISSION <br />AUGU5T 21, 1984 <br />TOM THUMB - VN-237 <br />Don Kaufman, Kaufman Sign Company .stated. that the proposed 8:50 P.M. - <br />sign did not project above the building and that because of 9:OO,P.M. <br />Brenda Krueger's interpretation of the ordinance he was re- <br />quired to go through the .expense of a variance to have a sign <br />which extendsmore than 18" below the facia. <br />Chairman Williams asked how most other Tom Thumb signs are mounted. <br />Mr. Kaufman tated that most Tom. Thumbs are now constructed with a <br />mansard roof for signage. Attempting here to mount sign of value.. <br />Commissioner Solberg asked if the proposed sign mounting would be <br />safe. <br />Mr. Kaufman stated it was. <br />Commissioner Livingston asked if the facia could be widened to 3 feet. <br />Mr. Kaufman stated `t hat would be a decision which would have to be <br />made by the Tom Thumb Company. It would have to be a false facia <br />with the sign probably put. up first and the facia built around it. <br />Commissioner Livingston asked if the angle irons would make it look <br />unfinished and safe. <br />Mr. Kaufman responded that the angle irons would be painted , the <br />sign would look finished, and the sign would be attached to a <br />6 foot header. <br />Chairman Williams asked staff if this proposal improves on a non- <br />conforming sign. <br />Staff stated it was still her opinion t-hat unique and unusual <br />circumstance and undue hardship had not been demonstrated to <br />warrant a variance, signab7e area was available. <br />Mr.Kaufman stated that the signable area was questionable since the <br />sign would have to be under 6 feet in height and subject to vandalism. <br />No one was present .from the public to speak. <br />Motion by Williams, seconded by Baker to close the public hearing. <br />4 Ayes - 0 Nayes, Motion Carried <br />Motion by Baker, seconded by Williams to adopt a RESOLUTION MAKING <br />FINDINGS OF FACT AND RECOMMENDING APPROVAL OF VARIANCE REQUEST VN-237, <br />sign for Tom Thumb and to make the following corrections to the staff <br />recommended resolution under the Findings of Fact. <br />2. That-the building was built many years <br />ago with a one foot facia. <br />3. That the old roof sign was destroyed by a tornado. <br />4. .Eliminate <br />'4 Ayes - 0 Nayes, Motion Carried. <br />
