After an initial set of
6", the number of blows required to drive the sampler an additional 12"
is known as the penetration resistance or N value. The N value is an
index of the relative density of cohesionless soils and the consistency
of cohesive soils.
Borings 3, 4 and 5 were put down with a 6" power auger and only disturbed
samples were recovered. Because of this method, our determination of the
depth and extent of the various layers of soil and the consistency of the
cohesive soils are only approximate.
As the samples were obtained in the field, they were visually and manually
classified by the crew chief in accordance with ASTM: D 2488-69. Logs
of the borings indicating the depth and identification of the various strata,
the N value, water level information and pertinent information regarding
the method of maintaining and advancing the drill holes are attached.
Charts illustrating the soil classification procedure, the descriptive
terminology and symbols used on the boring logs are also attached.
SITE AND SOIL CONDITIONS
The site is a old sanitary landfill that has been filled so, that the
present ground surface is about level or slightly below the grade of the
adjacent Highway 8. An, old topographic rap indicates that the majority
of the site was a swamp. There was a knoll in the area of the adjacent
aiwsV•irM - 1'.i""iCir'?:.e::rL*,ce...t a
