October 7, 1981
T0: The Members of the New Brighton Planning Commission
FROM:, Long Lake Improvement Association (L.L.I.A.)
Some members of the L.L.I.A. have challenged both the Planning Commission and
the City Council in the recent few months on the issue of the proposed Long
Lake/Rush Lake Regional Park.
The comments by these members were not well received by either the Planning
Commission or the Council. This... in unfortunate for all parties concerned as
it left a bad taste at the table.
We are here tonight, again representing the L.L.I.A. We are here to state
our position both with respect to what the L.L.I.A. is, and its concerns with
the proposed park.
The L.L.I.A. was formed over 10 years ago. The objectives of this group was
to maintain the quality of water in Long Lake. To this extent, the group
periodically induced chemical - copper sulfide, in Long Lake. This Baas done
with permission of the governing units. This process reduced the algae or
bloom on the lake,-and therefore, made for a better appearing lake for all
people who used the lake.
More recently, the functions of the group have increased with the increased
population of new families in New Brighton, and therefore, increased use of
snowmobiles, .boats and other water craft on the lake. The association has.
monitored safety in these areas. The group has discussed water craft safety
with those families who tend to violate the rules. The association has become
~ rt of the snowmobile patrol to aid and monitor safe operation and patrol
illegal use of snowmobiles. This group assisted when property owners com-
plained of illegal property entry with snowmobiles. More recently, the
association has become the clean-up crew for the ice fishermen. After each
weekend during the winter, members of the association have policed the lake
