May 6, 1981 Park Board Minutes
.Page 7
Carlson stated he has observed the response to the puppet wagon
and kids flock to it like ants to a picnic. There is great en-
thusiasm.
Schultz said the puppet wagon can be used in other places other
than parks; with seniors, in shopping centers, nursing homes,
Bible schools, etc.
Carlson said the seniors love it.
Gunderman said the handicapped groups love to work with that kind
of thing.
Carlson asked-what the total cost of the puppet wagon would be.
Schultz said $2,500-$3,000.
Johnson stated it sounds like a good program. We should have had
something like this years ago.
Olson asked if Schultz had people in mind who would operate the.
wagon.
Schultz said she has one for sure and another possibility. They
are both experienced in the puppet area-and would be very good in
the program..
Carlson stated he would like to get the puppet wagon off to a good
start and not start out:. with. poor quality and get a bad review.
Anderson said the maintenace crew-could build one fairly easily however
they are extremely busy this :time of year and do not have the extra
time right now.
Gunderman asked what the cost would be to have someone else build it.
Anderson said about $400-$500,
Staff reported that the City of Golden Valley had an unused puppet
wagon that they. were willing to rent or sell. The wagon was in
fairly poor. condition ..but could be rehabilitated with a couple of
days work. Staff also reported that while the wagon would be usable
it would never be a quality unit.. Gunderman .and Carlson both
opposed .renting or purchasing Golden Valley's wagon stating that
the City has a reputation for high standards and. that the wagon
from. Golden Valley did.-not meet-those-standards.
Gunderman said he agrees with Carlson. He feels we should do it
right the first time and start off with a quality program.
Carlson said this would be a great promotional item for. the donators
to have their name on the back of the wagon. We-would want some-
thing of good quality for this reason.
