March 3, 1981 Park Board Minutes
B. Downtown Development
Page 9
Anderson stated he had spoken with a planner from Kraus-A..nderson
and expressed the City's concern as to Veterans Park a The things
that are now present at Veterans should remain. For instance, we
should always have a ball diamond, play area, etc. The configur-
ation may change but we should keep the above items.
Anderson has discussed with Councilman Blomquist the possibility of
vacating 3rd-.Ave. Negotiate with the church and acquire a portion
of their parking lot and give them an access trail and the rights
to park on this lot and fit in with business use. The kids will not
have to cross the street. Retain half. of their parking area and
half of the people will have to walk about a block. We would lose
about an acre of land but will be compensated by what was picked
up on 10th Street.
Dahl. said the traffic is heavy. What will happen to it.
Anderson said. it could become a loop, technically it is possible.
Anderson said it appears to be a fairly good possibility. Another
advantage to the church would be they: would not have to plow and
maintain the lot.
Olson asked if the City would plow the lot on a Sunday.
Anderson said he .assumed so.
Van Hatten said there is not sufficient access on the south end.
Anderson the new lot would be put in.
Hogan said 3rd Ave. is the only one that goes through. Alot of
traffic goes through there, He thought perhaps 3rd could be
closed and 4th opened,
Anderson said he is not going to request it.
Van Hatten said if you block the street off, there will be opposition.
Anderson stated that when we get to the p.han we.will definitely
call a meeting with. residents,
Van Hatten said he is on the Church Board.
Anderson said we will go to the church when we have a proposal.
Schmidt said the planning staff will work with the park staff to
service. ..that area.
Anderson .said given -the economics of the situation, we don't have
much choice but to give up some park land.
Van Hatten commented he thought the City was talking about ex-
panding City Hall.
