- 2 -
back stops, some of them ......ed. Those kinds of things we
interpret as an active park. This one is primarily picnicking,
biking, hiking trails, swimming, boat launch yes, but not
necessarily power boats, not necessarily water skiing. Con-
ceivably canoes and kayaks. Conceivably yes, this could by
some definitions be active. We feel, however, that this will
serve the needs of the residents of New Brighton very well.
Something that is not being met at this time. And is really
passive compared to the rest of the parks that we've developed.
FW: Mr. Mayor. On the second page it says the picnic areas would
include ah ah number one large group area, company picnics,
pavillion, ball field, children's play area, ah right there you
state in your proposal including a ball field and ah when you say
a ball field it's a ball field. Ah between what you say in your
report and what you say now there's a difference. It doesn't
jibe.
JS: Councilman Werdeschegg, I'd remind you that any open area including
your back yard can be a ball field. Also we would include
Metropolitan Stadium.
- Groans from audience.
JS ....the difference in what the Park Director tried to tell you
was that this ball ....(end of tape)
FW: ...but it's something else. I can play........or badminton or
anything else in the back yard without having a ball field.
- Clapping.
FW: And then the other item, Mr. Mayor, is ah ah the first page
where it says the existing frontage road which parallels north
of Interstate 69~+ and intersects with Long Lake Road will,
will provide, not may, will provide access to the segregated
area of the South end of Long Lake, Lake surface use related
activities. For example, fishing, boating, waterskiing. Now
anytime anyone says waterskiing that means high powered boats of
at least 20 to ~0 horse power. Now the area, the southern part
of Long Lake is about the same size as Pike Lake and is not the
deepest end of the Lake. It has in the couple of areas ah
sufficiently deep. But the rest of it is mostly shallow and it
is p~imaril~ good for fishing that's about all it is, or for
swimming. And I just can't see how ah ah power boats, ah ....
water skiing, ah could be say working in concert with swimmers and
even canoists because they get right of way.... Ah I think this
proposal is not what I would have expected ah to have resulted
.....on the 8 or g neighborhood park meetings that were held and
the questionnaires that were returned.
- App laus e
Mr. Mayor.
JS. Yes.
JJ: I wonder if we in New Brighton wanted to ......a park with large
picnic and pavillion facilities which will attract people from
