7
Dialogue From January 21-I-th Council Meeting
MA. :, I think that's a synopsis of what the plan is. If therets any
questions from the council, be glad to answer them.
JS: I think before we go to the Council, is there a member of the
Park Board here who is representing the Park Board who would like
to made a statement regarding, is Arlyn here?
MA: He was coming but he had an .......meeting with the School Board
and didn't know if he'd be here at 9:00 O'clock. There's several
Park Board members here but I don't think arly's here.
JS: Is there any Park Board member representing the Park Board that,
or does any Park Board member wish to comment regarding the Plan
at this point? Okay, then I think we can start by...
AW: I was just going to state that
JS: I'm sorry. Mr. Westling.
A.W: Yes, I represent the area around Sunnyside, quite close to the
Lake and I've been involved in the Park Board for about six
months and I'm very pleased with the Plan so far. I hope you
people here are also. There's been a lot of work on it and
Maurie's done a lot of work and in my opinion it is passive to
the point where peopl can enjoy it without a lot of helter skelter
and this type of thing.
JS: Thank you. Further comments from the Park Board? Are there
questions from the Council?
FW: Mr. Mayor. I remember some of the input that we received regard-
ing the citizen's input to the type of park the citizen's of New
Brighton envisioned. Based on the questionnaire. A.nd I under-
stand it was tabulated and so forth and it was the preliminary
report by you that it is desirous to have a passive type of
Park. What you have presented looks to me a very active Park.
Boat launches, water skiing .................picnic areas. I
think it's quite active. I don't get the feeling from what the
questionnaire envisioned ah passive park activities ah compared.
to active park activities. I'd like to get a little more
explanation from you as to how come suddenly certain activities
became desirous in spite of the input of the park neighborhood
meetings.
MA: I don't know that the word in spite of is necessarily correct.
We think, and when I say 'we' I'm talking Staff and Park Board,
that we took the input, we interpreted it, granted, that has to
be done, but we feel that this in our sense of interpretation,
the traditional sense of interpreting 'passive' is what we
thought the people wanted. When we talk about a ball field, for
instance we're talking about an open area where people can play
a game of ball. That's not an active park but it's something,
it's an area where people can play. We look at-our neighborhood
parks and to some extent, and also Hansen Park, as active parks.
They have lighted hockey rinks and tennis courts. Thay have
ball fields and skinned in fields, ag lime on them, big high
