PARK BOARD MEETING <br />October 3, 1973 <br />Meeting was called to order at 8:03 p.m. <br />Board members present: Gunderman, Hagemeyer, Smith and U?eissman. Dahl <br />appeared at 9:10 p.m. Council Representative Eajon a.~~peared'at 8~~0 p.m. <br />Board members absent: Cook and Sherlock. <br />Others present: Allan Stahlberg, New Brighton Sportsman Club; Fritz <br />Werdouschegg, Linda Werdouschegg and Kelly O'Brien, Village ~es3dents; <br />Charles Corlett, Senior Intern and Robert M. Wickland, Director of Parks <br />and Recreation. <br />The minutes of the regular meeting of September 5, 1973 were corrected <br />to show that Lenore Parham of the Community Betterment Task Force was <br />present. The minutes were then approved as submitted. <br />New Brighton Sportsman Club <br />Allan Stahlberg of the New Brighton Sportsman Club appeared before the <br />Board to express the club's appreciation to the Village for its help <br />in their fishing contest and other projects. He stated that the Sports- <br />man Club wished to express their appreciattion by donating something to <br />the park system. The Board suggested that Mr. Stahlberg meet with the <br />staff to develop a list of possible projects and bring it back to the <br />Board meeting in November. <br />Freedom Park Tennis Courts <br />Fritz Werdouschegg, Linda Werdouschegg and Kelly O'Brien appeared before <br />the Board to request consideration of the construction of tennis courts <br />at Freedom Park. They presented a petition from the neighborhood <br />supporting this project.. Motion by Smith, seconded by Weissman. to accept <br />the petition. <br />Ms. O'Brien stated that the closest tennis courts to Freedom Park area <br />are located at Highview Jr. High School and that traffic on Silver Lake <br />Road makes these courts difficult to reach. She suggested that the courts <br />be placed on the small baseball field of along Silver Lake Road; stating <br />that tennis courts might be a better use .for the park property than the <br />baseball field, as there were two fields on the school grounds. <br />Certain concerns were raised. This project would involve funds that are <br />not programmed at the present time. It would involve trading of a baseball <br />field for tennis courts and it would put a permanent facility on Freedom <br />Park, which is the proposed site for an ice arena or pool. Placing a <br />permanent facility on this site would certainly affect that long-range <br />plan. It was further pointed out. that sidewalks along Silver Lake Road <br />
