i • <br />~2~ <br />Sherlock expressed his concern .that Long Lake may become another <br />Schmidt .Park should the County surround Long Lake with County park <br />property. <br />Hemmings replied that the use of Long Lake site can be controlled <br />through design and access planning and it definitely was the County's <br />intention to preserve the area. <br />Dahl indicated that she was interested in pursuing the possibilities <br />of Rush Lake being included in the Open Space System. <br />Motion by Smith that the Park Board recommend to the Village Council <br />that the Ramsey Gnunty proposal for acquisition of the Rush Lake <br />property be approved and that a final determination as to the <br />Mississippi Street extension be made because of its affect on the <br />County's acquisition of the Rush Lake property for open space and <br />the access to the Long Lake and Rush Lake properties. The Park <br />Board further recommends that Mississippi Street not be extended. <br />Seconded by Dahl. <br />In discussing the motion, Mr. Edmonds stated that he felt it to be <br />entirely reasonable that the County consider assisting in the <br />development of the Long Lake property. It was his feeling that with <br />the inclusion of Rush Lake the entire area would function as one <br />complex and, therefore; the planning, development and operation <br />should be coordinated. This could even extend to financial assistance. <br />Motion carries. <br />Snowmobile Trails <br />George Carlson of the Ramsey County Patrol and Richard Larson of the <br />New Brighton Snowmobile Club made a presentation on snowmobile use <br />in the Village of New Brighton. They prefaced the presentation vrith <br />the statement that Near Brighton was a poor place for snowmobiles <br />because there was really no place to go. There were no trails within <br />the Village and there was no legal exit out of the Village. Snow- <br />mobiles are land-locked by the freeway system and the highly developed <br />city of Fridley. One potential exit; the railroad cr-ossing over <br />35-U1 to Shoreview vrhere extensive snowmobile areas exist, is forbidden <br />by the railroad and the arsenal. The presentation consisted of a <br />slide tour showing snowmobile routes which are used in New Brighton.. <br />The major one involves the Long Lake and Rush Lake areas and is <br />relatively safe and isolated from residential development. However, <br />it is difficult to get to from many areas of the Village without <br />transporting the snowmobile. <br />Carlson indicated that what was needed was a positive approach and <br />that rather than complain about all of the problems about snowmobiling, <br />efforts should be made to find areas where snowmobiling can occur <br />without creating problems. He indicated that at one time a commitment <br />
