He stated that it was the tentative plan to employ a
non-school person in each of three areas in the districto Bel-
Air, Sunnyside and Snail Lake. This person would work through
local neighborhood groups to organize programs for school and
non-school people. The basic orientation of the program is to
make school facilities available to the maximum amount for edu-
cational and recreational purposes. He stated that he wanted to
bring about the idea that schools belong to the community. It
was his intent to go into each community to get a picture of that
community~s needs.
The Park Board held a brainstorming session of what their concept
of a community school is.
Dahl stated that she felt that it was a tUro-way street and both
school and other community facilities should be included.
Sherlock stated that the major purpose of a community school is
to avoid duplication of efforts so as to keep taxes down.
Cook replied that the real purpose was to maximize the availability
of educational and recreational facilities and that financial
savings would be a by-product of this intent.
Gunderman stated that the total community, including churches,
Y.M.C.A.; etc., must be involved.
Sherlock replied that the program mus'c be kept to a practical
level by starting small. He further stated that if an attempt
was made to get every sin gle interested agency involved in the
beginning, the whole thing would fail due to confusion.
